A Thomas Walters brace was the difference in the first round of the MG Cup for the Reds at the Pen Y Pound stadium in Abergavenny on Friday evening.

On the Reds first competetive outing of the new season the team returned with a 2-0 win to progress into round two of the Nathaniel Car Sales MG Cup.

Andy Hill's men sporting their new yellow and black away kit got off to a fantastic start on 3 minutes with Luke Bowen providing an inch perfect cross from the right after Ryan George and Tyler Brock released him after some good work, Walters had found room on the back post and sent a header back across the goalkeeper into the far corner.

On 24 minutes Bowen again provided a superb assist with a low driven cross again finding the Ferry number nine in the six yard box to guide his shot home for 2-0.

Abergavenny had some hope to get back into the game on 50 minutes after left back Declan Horgan-Evans received his second yellow card but team effort combined with some excellent goalkeeping from debutant Aaron Jones ensured a clean sheet and progression into the next round.

The second round draw takes place Monday evening at 8pm.

Next up is the first Cymru South league game of the season against Llanelli Town at Old Road this coming Friday at 7.30pm.
