Ladies in eight goal thriller - Briton Ferry Llansawel AFC

Briton Ferry Llansawel Ladies travelled to Cwmbran Celtic on Sunday afternoon in what turned out to be a terrific match ending in a 4-4 draw.

The reds started the better with Megan Kearle shooting just wide in the second minute.

The home team quickly got into the game though and went close themselves in the 7th minute with Jess Garlick making the save.

In the 13th minute the hosts did take the lead with a long ball down the right which their pacey striker got onto and beat Garlick at the near post.

That gave the home side confidence and they were winning most of the 50-50 battles around the field.

The reds did keep plugging away and in the 24th minute Lucy Powell shot just wide from a Becca Rees cross.

Two minutes later though the reds were level when the impressive Sophie Cardy stepped out from defence and hit a great shot from 35 yards out, the home keeper did well to make the stop but could only push the ball out to Powell who had followed up quickly and tapped home for 1-1

Unfortunately the reds were unable to hold onto their lead with another long ball to the striker causing the problem, this time down the left and she shot across Garlick this time into the far corner of the net.

Celtic had chances to increase their lead before half time but were unable to take them and the reds almost went in level after Kearle shot just over the bar from 30 yards as the half drew to a close.

After some strong words in the Ferry dressing room at half time the reds came out and dominated the early stages of the second half with some good passing and ball possession and in the 50th minute were level when Ela Roberts attacked down the right and chipped the ball over the keeper to level the scores.

The reds were now in the ascendency and looked the more likely to add a third but in the 57th minute they failed to clear a corner and the home side bundled the ball home to regain the lead.

Before the reds could settle again they found themselves 4-2 down with another long ball putting their striker away down the left and she finished well leaving the reds with an uphill battle to get anything from the game.

They didn’t drop their heads though and in the 64th minute the impressive Mel Thomas saw an effort go just over the bar.

In the 73rd minute another good run from Cardy saw her create some space for a shot which was well saved by the Celtic keeper but Carys Wilkinson was first to react to finish to make it 4-3.

With 11 minutes remaining the reds were level when Wilkinson played the ball into Thomas who found some space as she advanced from right back and she unleashed a great effort from 30 yards into the roof of the net.

The reds were now right on top and pushing for the winner but the home defence held firm.

With two minutes remaining Powell played a good ball in from the left but Wilkinson was unable to get a strong enough connection on her finish and the home team also went close to grabbing all three points with Thomas making a good clearance off the goal line.

Star Player: Sophie Cardy – An impressive performance from the defender on her return from injury and kept the reds going when behind, with some great runs out of defence.
