The Bootroom with Carl Shaw

The Bootroom with Carl Shaw - Briton Ferry Llansawel AFC

We caught up with manager Carl Shaw ahead of the league opener against Risca next Saturday and here's what he had to say...

In summary how happy were you with your first season in division one, and how difficult do you feel the second season will be?

I was very happy with our first season in division one, especially after a very difficult start to the season, the boys worked hard and got used to the division. This season will be just as hard, the three sides which came up are all very good sides add that to the teams we played last year and you realise how difficult our league is. We just got to keep improving and working hard and hopefully that will be good enough for us to finish in the top half again.

How do you feel pre-season has gone so far?

Pre- season for clubs like us are hard, with everyone taking their holidays it’s difficult to get everyone training and available for games at the same time, but we have done ok we’ve got better each game and hopefully by the 15th we will be ready to go!

Port Talbot game and Lee Trundle appearance?

It was a good game which I think we did ok in and of course having Lee to play for us was fantastic experience for all concerned, I can’t thank Lee enough for playing and hopefully it won’t be the last time you see him playing in our colours. It was also very good to see a nice crowd watching the game and hopefully some of them will come back during the season.

How happy are you that you have retained the squad from last season?

I am delighted, my biggest concern over the summer was that other sides would come knocking for my players after them doing so well last season, but thankfully they have all stayed committed to the club and each other and hopefully we can kick on and provide some success for the club. It’s so nice having so many local players doing well together in division one, the team spirit amongst the boys is the best I have seen in my years in football.

With the new season upon us how tough do you feel our opening game will be against Risca and what do you think about the teams in our league this season?

Well I know the opening game is going to be a very difficult game, we played them a couple of years ago and they were a good side and I know that they have improved since then, but we are home and our home record last year was excellent so it will be important we start well and keep our home form. As for the other teams in the league, I think this year will be a very hard division, with all teams able to beat each other on the day, and will be a very tight division all season. Hopefully we can improve on last year and keep the going in the right direction. Thanks for everyone's continued support, see you all soon down the Old Road and don’t forget to join us in Bar Red after the games!!

Shawsy.
