Briton Ferry Llansawel Ladies maintained their place at the top of the Welsh Women’s League with a hard fought 2-1 victory against Cwmbran Celtic on Sunday.
The reds started well and Renee Day went close in the 4th minute but saw her effort turned around the post from the Cwmbran keeper.
The reds continued to push forward but found the visitors defence to be well organised and held firm, midway through the half Lucy Powell saw an effort well blocked by the keeper but the ball rebounded to Becca Rees and her chipped effort was again collected by the away keeper who produced a good performance for the visitors.
In the 25th minute the visitors had their best effort of the half but Ferry keeper Jess Garlick produced a good save to keep the game scoreless.
In the final minute of the half Ela Roberts attacked down the right for the reds and put in a powerful shot but again the visitor’s keeper made a good stop at the near post.

The reds came out strongly again at the start of the second half and pinned the visitors back in their half.
In the 52nd minute Powell went close with a free kick but a Cwmbran defender managed to get her head to it and deflected it just over the bar.
However, from the resultant corner the reds deservedly took the lead when a long corner from Day found Powell coming in at the back post to volley the ball inside the near post giving the keeper no chance.
The reds continued to have the majority of possession but the visitors were not giving up without a fight and got themselves level with a well struck free kick on the right-hand edge of the area by captain Vicki Randall in the 70th minute.
Five minutes later Cwmbran went close to taking the lead but saw their effort go just wide but that spurred the reds back into life and in the final 10 minutes of the game pinned the visitors back into their half as they hunted a winner.
In the 86th minute Megan Kearle went on a great run beating 4 players before unleashing a great shot but again the Cwmbran keeper made a good save to keep the scores level.
The Cwmbran defenders were putting their bodies on the line to keep the now rampant reds out and in the 91st minute conceded a free kick on the edge of their area.
Kearle stepped up and put her effort on target but somehow the ball was scrambled away by the visitors.
A minute later the reds had another free kick on the edge of the area and this time Powell stepped up and fired her effort into the roof of the net to the joy of the Ferry coaches and supporters.
