We also caught up with youth team manager Michael Rutherford ahead of their league opener at Dafen on Sunday.
Hi Mike, congratulations on your new role as head of the youth. How is the feeling in the camp ahead of your first league game on Sunday at Dafen?
Thank you very much, would just like to say thank you to everyone at the club for making feel welcome and giving me an opportunity to continue my development as a coach. We are all extremely excited and can't wait to get involved in the West Wales Youth League, Sunday will be a very tough game considering Dafen completed their season unbeaten in their respective league but we are ready for the challenge.
You were hands on in with the youth trials in the summer , are you happy with the squad and how the build-up has gone?
We gave an opportunity to the players from the u16 West Glamorgan Junior League to come and showcase their talents in various training sessions and games. It was very difficult to cut the squad down to 18 players but I feel that the right decisions were made and I am very happy with the players that are part of our squad and will hopefully be with us for the next 3 seasons for the duration of their youth football phase.
What is your vision for the youth set up at the Old Road?
Long term I would love to see multiple players progress from our youth set up and consolidate themselves in the senior sides for years to come, along with this I'd love to see a West Wales Youth squad and a Welsh Youth League squad side by side that are both competitive and challenging for titles and cups.
What do you see as your aims and targets for the season ahead?
We've discussed this as a group and first and foremost we would like to enjoy our football this season, along with this we are all aiming to improve physically, technically, tactically and mentally, and we would like to set our foundations for next season and be an example to the future youth squads that will be selected to play at the Old Road.
We would like to wish Mike and the squad best of luck for the season ahead!
