Probert proves unbeatable!
Ferry draw blank as students pass Old Road test

Briton Ferry v Monmouth Town

Goals, goals and more goals have been the story of the Ferry’s season prior to welcoming the students from Cardiff University. With most of the praise this season afforded to the attacking prowess of the Old Road outfit, it was somewhat inevitable sooner or later that they would experience a frustrating afternoon where chances were few and far between.

While most of the plaudits have gone out to the strikers, in particular the prolific Gareth Jones it was Ferry number one Luke Probert who stole the show with an impeccable performance which went a long way to securing a point for the Reds.

Making the relatively short journey down the M4, UWIC turned the form book up side down and belittled their lowly league position with a performance that went along way to showing that it is far too early to take any team likely based on their league position.

UWIC manager Christian Edwards stated after the game “This is the first opportunity I have had of playing my first choice eleven” This was evident from the outset as the students started the brighter and continued to threaten until the final quarter where they defended a deluge of attacks from the Ferry eventually holding out and ensuring they returned with the point their efforts rightly deserved.

The Reds who have scored goals for fun this season found the surprisingly resolute UWIC hard to break down, but in truth this sentiment could be echoed for both teams, highlighted by two superb Man of the Match performances from each goalkeeper who both made fine saves to prevent their respective opposition from making the breakthrough.

The first 70 minutes saw each team creating and missing the few chances that presented themselves and it was only in the last 20 minutes that the Ferry asserted themselves putting the students on the back foot and creating a number of good chances. The most notable highlight came in the 75th minute when Ferry number nine Richard Evans’ chipped the UWIC goalkeeper but agonisingly saw is effort rebound of the cross bar.

Although the Ferry pressed looking to claim all three points they were without question thankful to their goalkeeper Luke Probert. With a gaping goal to aim at the UWIC centre forward was not only denied once but twice when Probert pulled off a phenomenal double save ensuring the game finished all square.
